Preventative Tips: Defensive Teaching Strategies
Familiarize yourself with school procedures and classroom
routines.
Teach with the classroom door open, whenever possible.
Supervise your students at ALL times.
DO NOT LEAVE STUDENTS UNATTENDED!
Never be alone with a student. If you must speak to a child
after class, keep it short and professional. Stay in view of the hall.
Stand by the door.
Maintain your “personal” space. Don’t let students crowd
around you or your desk.
Maintain professional communication. Think carefully about
what you say and write as your words and gestures can be misinterpreted
and held against you.
Avoid touching students. An assault is any unwelcome touch!
If you touch a student, be prepared to defend your actions. Children,
staff, and parents are suspicious of strangers, be cautious
as OTs are
the “strangers” in the schools.
Do not share phone numbers, email addresses or personal
websites with students.
Don’t drive students in your personal vehicle.
Avoid confrontation. Call for administrative back up.
Don’t let students get to you. No issue is worth the
sacrifice of your reputation or your career.
Document and keep a copy of incidents that transpire during
the day which seems even slightly out of the ordinary. Keep your
notations stating the facts and write down the essential Ws – who,
what, when, where, why, and witnesses.
Make these tips part of your daily routine!
