FEBRUARY 21 – Annual Pancake Supper at Holy Family School

On Shrove Tuesday (February 21), Holy Family School will be hosting its bi-annual Pancake Supper. There will be two seatings, one at 5:30 p.m. and one at 6:30 p.m. The cost is minimum donation of $10 per family. The meal includes all you can eat pancakes, sausages, coffee, juice and dessert. All proceeds will be going to Chalice to continue our sponsorship of a child in Kenya and to ShareLife. Location: Holy Family School, 61 Allan Drive, Bolton. FEBRUARY 22 - Cardinal Ambrozic C.S.S. hosts Anthony McLean, motivational speaker and documentarian

Anthony McLean is a motivational speaker and documentarian. Students will view the documentary film, " Colour Me" which explores the confines of race, the complexity of identity and the need to find your voice. NEW! – February 23 – Toronto Raptors’ Youth Development Program Assembly at Cardinal Newman School

Cardinal Newman Catholic School proudly welcomes members of the Toronto Raptors' Youth Development Program on the morning of February 23. The school will assemble for a presentation by the Raptors centered on dedication, responsibility, education, attitude and motivation (i.e., DREAM). Following the general assembly, the school's Grade 4s will be participating in a basketball skills clinic with members of the Raptors' Youth Program. FEBRUARY 23 - St. Marcellinus S.S. celebrates Millionth Penny (The Penny Project – In memory of the Holocaust Victims)

St. Marcellinus Secondary School has a group entitled “The Penny Project”. The goal of the group is collect and roll 13 million pennies in memory of the 13 million people who lost their lives during the Holocaust. Hence, “Give a penny – remember a life”. Their proceeds will be used to further genocide education and prevention. The group will be celebrating their first milestone by rolling their millionth penny on Thursday, February 23 in Room 216 of the school at 2:30 p.m. They will invite various community members who have been supportive of their efforts to join them. FEBRUARY 23 – St. Ursula School hosts Charity Hockey Tournament for Hospital for Sick Children

In honour of our schools 10 year anniversary St. Ursula School is currently planning a fundraising event to take place on Thursday, February 23. Our goal and purpose for this charity event is to raise money to support the Hospital for Sick Children. This is a school-wide initiative which provides a great sense of community to students, families and teachers. In order for this event to be successful we are looking for community partner support. This charity event will be an ice hockey game at Cassie Campbell with the community partners versus our student hockey team. We have a great line-up of 'celebrities' coming out, including: James Yurichuk - CFL player BC Lions, Jason Portuondo - CHCH TV/G98.7fm Radio, Astral Media - 'Street Team' personnel. FEBRUARY 23 - Mississauga Brampton Central Science Olympics

San Lorenzo Ruiz School will host the annual Science Olympic Competition for junior students in the Mississauga Brampton Central Family of Schools on February 23 from 9:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. This competition will provide students the opportunity to demonstrate their problem solving skills through a series of science and technology challenges. FEBRUARY 23 – St. Roch C.S.S. hosts Birthday Banquet at Grace United

St. Roch Catholic Secondary School students will collaborate with Regeneration and Grace United Church to cook and serve a Birthday Banquet the fourth Thursday of every month for the marginalized youth and adults of Brampton. Students will cook the meal in our school kitchen, and then deliver, plate and serve the meal to the clients of Regeneration at Grace United from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Students will also set up and clean up. The idea is to celebrate the birthdays month by month of the people who live in the downtown core of Brampton. And these people will not line up as they usually do. They will be served by our students, as they sit in their seats with their friends and acquaintances. Grace United has become their community centre. It is a safe and caring environment that provides breakfast each weekday morning, as well as haircuts, foot care and general health care, clothing, an I.D. Clinic, personal care kits, bagged lunches, and now, a Birthday Banquet. St. Roch is proud to work alongside Regeneration and Grace United. Our students will get their volunteer hours, but they’ll receive much more than their mandated community service hours. How do you measure such an experience? Priceless! FEBRUARY 23 – Father Francis McSpiritt School hosts Richard Pierpoint and the Company of Coloured Men

On February 23, Anthony Sherwood Productions will be presenting an in-school dramatic performance for Black History Month at Father Francis McSpiritt Catholic School. The performance is based on the commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812 and is entitled “Richard Pierpoint and the Company of Coloured Men”. Richard Pierpoint was an African who was captured and sold into slavery around 1760. We learn about his journey to becoming one of the first settlers in Southern Ontario. On the evening of February 23rd, 2012, Keynote speaker Fergie Jenkins, former Harlem Globe Trotter and Canadian Hall of Famer for baseball tells his story. Fergie celebrates the commemoration of his new postage stamp in Canada for black history month. Also celebrating Black History Month with us is singer/song-writer/ actress and former Girlicious member, Chrystina Sayer-singing a few of her own songs. World known reggae band Higher Ground will complete the celebration with classic reggae hits. Come see our Philip Pocock talent, pay tribute to music of past and present. FEBRUARY 23 (snow date: February 24) - Mississauga South’s Annual Speech Competition

Only one Junior and one Intermediate competitor from each school will attend the Family level competition. Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners. All participants will receive a participation award. We encourage Junior competitors to remain only for the morning competition, and likewise, Intermediate competitors attend only for the afternoon. The Mississauga North Family of Schools is pleased to announce the 2nd Annual “We Are One” Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity Conference. FEBRUARY 24 – Cardinal Ambrozic C.S.S. hosts news anchor, Dwight Drummond

Dwight Drummond, a news anchor and co-host of CBC News Toronto will be speaking to Cardinal Ambrozic students on February 24 at 1 p.m. An Ontario Scholar and graduate of Ryerson University's Radio and Television Arts program, Dwight has done "just about every job there is to do in a newsroom" . Known for his exclusives, he's broken local stories that have gone national and has reported from the U.S., Caribbean and Africa. FEBRUARY 25 – St. Thomas Aquinas S.S. Annual Cabaret Night

Aquinas students are thrilled to be putting on another fantastic musical talent show. This all live performance features the school's strongest and most creative musical talent, as students perform works of their choosing in the popular, rock, blues and jazz genres. This show is complemented by refreshments and prizes. Proceeds raised will be put towards the music department's trip to Montreal and to purchase equipment for the students. Aquinas' Music Department is hosting this event on Saturday February 25 at 6:00 p.m. in the S.T.A. cafetorium. Tickets are $10.00 each and are available from participating students on February 21-25. FEBRUARY 25 – Dufferin-Peel’s 5th Annual Mississauga Chess Championships

The 5th Annual Mississauga Chess Championships will take place on Saturday, February 25 at St. Faustina School. This is an individual grade level tournament open to any student who attends a Dufferin-Peel school in Grades K-12. The top two finishers in each grade will qualify for the Ontario Championships in May. NEW! - February 28 - BECDM Equity, Diversity and Inclusive Education Workshop #3: A Catholic Response to Gendered Conflict

On February 28 staff from the Brampton East/Caledon/Dufferin/Malton Family of Schools, are invited to attend Workshop #3: A Catholic Response to Gendered Conflict Workshop as part of our Equity, Diversity and Inclusive Education workshop series. This workshop will provide strategies that school staff can use to address the various issues surrounding gendered conflict and gendered bullying. At this session we will determine what further examination is required in regards to implementing crucial conversations between staff and students to address gendered conflict and strategies for conflict resolution. CANCELLED - February 29 & March 1 - Annual St. Rita Rock Classic Hockey Tournament

8 Team Intermediate Tournament/8 Team Junior Tournament - Date: Wednesday, February 29. Play Offs and Championship for Junior & Intermediate - Date: Thursday, March 1. Location: Powerade Centre, 7575 Kennedy Road South, Brampton. We are looking for eight teams in each age group to make two divisions. All teams will be guaranteed to play a min. three games Wednesday. The top two teams in each division will advance to Thursday. The first pace teams will cross over and play the second place teams. The winner from each game will advance to the Championship. We would like to balance this year's tournament to allow more teams the opportunity of success. Periods to be played will be 10-10-10 stopped times. There will be NO BODY CHECKING OR SLAP SHOTS permitted. All other G.T.H.L. rules will be in effect. Cost: $500 by Monday, January 30. Power of Movement is Canada’s largest yoga fundraiser, which raises funds for the Arthritis Research Foundation. Thousands of Canadians join together on Sunday, March 4 to celebrate movement, no matter how big or small that movement is. This year, St. Joseph Secondary School, is joining in and hosting a yoga class on March 2, so that students and staff can participate in this amazing event. NEW! – March 2 & 5 – Hall Drama Performs in Italy! (Preview performances for school community)

You are cordially invited to see a performance of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) which Hall Drama has the honour of performing in Macerata, Italy during the March Break. The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) is a hilarious parody of the plays written by William Shakespeare with all of them being performed (in very shortened form) during the show by only four actors. All 37 Plays in 90 minutes! An irreverent, fast-paced romp through the Bard's plays, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) was London's longest-running comedy (10 years in the West End at the Criterion Theatre). Hall Drama has been asked to perform overseas again by the Festival of International Theatre and Arts (FITA). This year, Hall Drama will be performing The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) at the Teatro Don Bosco in Macerata, Italy during the March Break. The Grade 10 and 11 students will participate in Unity Day by attending an assembly that will inspire them to use various art forms to express themselves. Several classes will participate in workshops run by the artists in the afternoon; the workshops include: graffiti art, break dancing, beat boxing, and spoken word. UNITY Charity is an Arts Based Alternative Education Organization for Youth. UNITY engages youth by implementing school and community programs helping youth express their stress and develop skills for success. MARCH 27 – Dufferin-Peel’s Technological Skills Competition 2012

The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board’s Students’ Technological Skills Competition will be held on Tuesday, March 27 from 8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., medal ceremony to follow, at St. Augustine Secondary School in Brampton. Dufferin-Peel students will have the opportunity to showcase their skills in an Olympic-style, hands-on competition, which serves as a qualification round for the Skills Canada Provincial Competition.

Approximately 500 students from approximately 20 schools (both elementary and secondary) will compete in over 40 trade and technological areas, including 3D character animation, baking, carpentry, hair styling, health care, and robotics to name a few. Students will be challenged to make items that are reflective of the theme, Building the City of God. Representatives from local businesses and colleges will judge the competition, and the top students will qualify to move on to the provincial finals being held in Waterloo this May. Students who are successful at the provincial competition will advance to the Skills Canada National Competition, where they will have the opportunity to compete against students from across Canada. APRIL 14 & 15 - 2012 PEEL REGION SCIENCE FAIR

The 2012 Peel Region Science Fair, celebrating the work of young scientists and recognizing excellence in their research and innovation will be held on Saturday April 14 to Sunday April 15 at Louise Arbour S.S. (Brampton). Register at: www.peelscience.ca/sfiab from February 1 to April 1. The Science Fair is open to students in Peel Region, in Grades 7 to 12. Each project may have a maximum of two students. We recommend that each school send at least one teacher to help judge on Saturday April 14. A light lunch will be provided for all judges and volunteers. Public viewing of the projects will be held on Sunday April 15 from 1-2 p.m. followed by the Awards Ceremony. The Peel Region Science Fair (PRSF) is a unique opportunity to promote project based science for the youth of today. The top 10 students will have an opportunity to participate at the Canada Wide Science Fair from May 12-May 19 in Charlottetown, PEI, where over $900,000 worth of prizes can be won. APRIL 17 - Ontario Mathematics Olympiad at St. Martin Secondary School

This OMO trial will determine which school will represent the board at the provincial Mathematics Olympiad in Windsor on June 8 and 9, 2012. The Junior competition will be held in the morning of the 19th, followed by the Intermediate tournament in the afternoon. APRIL 26 & 27 - St. Edmund Campion's "The Company" presents ONCE AGAIN ON THIS ISLAND JR.

This musical is lively featuring calypso style music and mythical characters. Its plot has been described as being a combination of Little Mermaid and Romeo and Juliet. It’s a story that touches hearts and leaves its audiences pondering about the true power of love and forgiveness. MAY 9 – DPCDSB Mississauga South 8th Annual Joe Sax Activity Festival

On May 9, the Mississauga South Family of Schools will hold the 8th Annual Joe Sax Activity Festival from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Iona Catholic Secondary School. The aim of the Festival is to offer modified physical activities for students in Grades 4 to 8 as a way of promoting inclusion through play. The Festival is designed to contribute to the physical, social and psychological development of students through positive and successful experiences in sport. The Festival has been named as a tribute to Joe Sax, a former teacher at Iona Catholic Secondary School. Joe was a distant coach for the Mississauga Track Club, a member of the Toronto Olympic Club and the former Canadian record holder for the 3000m Steeplechase. MAY 18 - D.P.C.C. 7th Annual Board Chess Tournament Finals

Our schools are competing across four divisions in chess (primary, junior, intermediate, and high school). Each divisional team consists of five students. The top two teams from the seven family competitions around our board qualify for the Board Finals. This year’s tournament will be held at Our Lady of Mount Carmel S.S, 3700 Trelawny Circle, Mississauga. High School registration will start at the end of the exam period.
